The actions of extremist Jews in setting fire to an historical church located near the Sea of Galilee is "proof of the Israeli occupation's racism and its rejection of all those who are not Jewish", a Hamas spokesperson said.
In a press release, Hossam Badran said setting fire to the church was a criminal offense, adding that such actions are committed repeatedly against Muslims and Christians in Palestine and that they aim to erase the Palestinian heritage and change the features of the land.
Jewish settlers set the Tabgha church on fire early this morning. The included a monastery for monks. Two people sustained injuries from the fire. Verses from the Torah were written in Hebrew on the church's entrance.
Badran added: "This crime was not committed by marginal occupation groups; it was committed in the context of the systematic and continuous incitement exercised by various institutions and individuals on the level of Israeli politics, religion and media."
He also pointed out that the extremist Jewish groups "receive legal cover", noting that "they are neither prosecuted nor held responsible for their actions."
Badran called on the parties concerned with the Palestinian cause and world heritage to "expose" the occupation and condemn its actions which violate all international laws and conventions. He also urged the Palestinians to stand their ground and confront the occupation in all arenas and by all means and forms in order to defeat the occupation and get rid of its consequences for good.
